Dunbar held their inaugural 2nd XV Seven a Side tournament on Saturday. The teams were playing for the Douglas Robertson Cup. Douglas has been involved in Dunbar Rugby Club for many years and is an honorary member and was President in 1985, 86, 93, 94, 95, 98 and 1999. Douglas has worked tirelessly over many years with the 2nd XV at Dunbar and through his efforts the Management dedicated this Tournament in his honour.
Dunbar invited all the teams in the East Development League to participate but a few late call-offs saw additional teams added. The format was that of two Leagues with the winners meeting in the final. Dunbar RFC 2XV, RAF Boulmer, Napier University and EPDRI (Ex-President Douglas Robertson Invitational) where in one side of the draw. Napier University with their young squad went unbeaten in that group where the highlight was the match between the two Dunbar sides. This as expected was a close run thing with the lead changing hands on several occasions before the Second XV stretched away to win by 27 points to 17..
The other group included Ross High, Forresters, Leith, Walkerburn and Moray House/Walkerburn. This group was a much closer run thing with both Forresters and Moray House/ Watsonians going unbeaten leaving the winners of their match to progress to meet the Napier students. This was a close run thing with two youngish sides pitting their wits against each other. It was evenly matched in the early stages with the score level at 12 points each. The much stronger Moray House/ Watsonian team then stretched away to win comfortably in the end by 43 points to 12.
The final was an extremely entertaining match that saw Moray House/Watsonians score early. The match was then a battle of wits as both teams defended incredibly well. It was not until late in the second half that Moray House/ Watsonians scored three tries that the victory was sealed by 26 points to nil.
Douglas Robertson made a stirring speech with almost a tear in his eye as he presented the winning team with the Trophy. This was an extremely successful day even with the conditions deteriorating later on. This no doubt will continue in the future as all clubs hailed the day a great success.
